The National Youths Service Corps Orientation Camp, Wannune in Benue State has been closed following directives from the headquarters in Abuja.
The Public Relations Officer of the Benue State NYSC, Mrs. Veronica Ogwuche told Corps members to leave the orientation camp as soon as possible.
“We have been asked to close down all orientation camps and discharge Corp members for their various places of primary assignment, she explained.”
She said the abrupt ending of the Camp was part of preventive measures taken by the NYSC against the spread of the deadly corona virus in the country.
Reports have it that, the virus has killed over 7000 persons globally while more cases of the virus are been confirmed in Nigeria.
“All corps members were urged to avoid travelling, getting free rides from stranger’s which could be detrimental to their lives,” Ogwuche told the corps members.
“Also in line with this directive all corps members are expected to go back to their various residential addresses pending the time when all dust will be settled, and this measure is to avert anything that could endanger the lives of the Corp members and staff of NYSC.
NYSC had on Thursday 12 March performed the swearing in Ceremony for the 2020 Batch A stream I corps members and were expected to leave on March 30th. The stream two corps members were expected to resume camp on April 2nd.
Speaking with The Voice, one of the Corp members, Halima Yusuf expressed dismay over camp closure, saying corps members would not benefit from the training given in Camps, which, according to her is highly beneficial during and after the service year.
Another corps member Chibuzor Okoye on his part commended the federal Government over the decision saying it is a clear indication that the government has the interest of the people at heart.
Mrs. Blessing Agbo also expressed disappointment but said the decision is the best to avoid the dangerous outcomes.
Another Corp Member, Sunday Hope explained that the orientation camp was a place that provides a platform for the rules and regulations of the NYSC to be studied by each Corp member, however the shutdown of the orientation camp have sent diverse feelings in the heart of most Corp members, first it has sent a sad feeling due to the fact that most of the rules and regulation that has to be carried out by serving Corp members will be incomplete due to the fact that the camp has been shut down for one week.
According to him, the shut down has caused a setback for most Corp members because it also provides a platform for Corp members to create relationship with people from all works of life adding however that an avenue getting connected, but after some consideration, the shutdown was meaningful since the outbreak of the Corona-virus (COVID-19) declared by the WHO as a pandemic and contagious disease, would reduce the risk of spreading the disease.
