From Esther Akaa, Lafia
The chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Nasarawa State, Comrade Yusuf Iya, has promised to provide an enabling environment for all workers in the state for the development of the state.
Comrade Iya made this commitment during the State Executive Council, SEC, meeting held recently at the Labour House in Lafia.
He stressed that the working condition of workers, especially the local government staff in Nasarawa State was in a deplorable state, saying there was need for government to address such issues.
The labour chairman maintained that his administration will engage the government through social dialogue as well as adopt the principle of collective bargain to ensure that such issues are addressed.
“In our agenda, just as the constitution of the NLC stipulates, the interest of workers of Nasarawa State shall be paramount above other interests,” he said.
Comrade Iya further stated that the NLC under his leadership would ensure the prompt implementation of the Thirty Thousand Naira New Minimum Wage which has been signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“In addition to what we are going to do is to ensure that the minimum wage that has been signed into law by the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is adopted in Nasarawa State without subjecting it to any rancour,” Comrade Iya added.
According to him, his administration will also pursue vigorously the arrears of salaries owned workers at the state and local governments, as well as ensure training and retraining of workers in different fields of their endeavour.
He said as part of the union’s effort to reposition the state, SEC, has inaugurated three committees, namely: transition, May Day and bulletin committees to spearhead some of its activities.
He called on members of the committee to work hard to achieve its purpose and pledged to carry everyone along.
